Dr. Chrystal Dean

Dr. Chrystal Dean is a professor of mathematics education and the interim director of the Mathematics and Science Education Center in the Reich College of Education (RCOE). She received her B.S. in mathematics/secondary education and her M.A. in instructional technology from Appalachian State University. After teaching mathematics and science for four years to fulfill her North Carolina Teaching Fellows obligation, she earned her Ph.D. in mathematics education from Vanderbilt University.

Prior to coming to Appalachian State University, she was on faculty at Clemson University for three years.

Currently, she is serving as the Association of Mathematics Education (AMTE) Associate Vice President for Contemporary Issues in Technology and Teacher Education-Mathematics Education (CITE-Math Co-editor).

She is a recent grant recipient of the Chancellors Innovation Scholars Program to establish a mathematics clinic in the RCOE.

Her research focuses on supporting students who struggle with mathematics, and she teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in mathematics education, special education, and assessment.
